The complex machine that is your body can be influenced by many factors, including diet. Not only can it affect your physical health, but your dental health, as well. If you consume too many sugar-laden foods or beverages, it can create many dental issues, most commonly decay.

Dr. Frederick Prehn recommends paying particular attention to the foods you eat and drinks you consume, and alter your diet to help prevent cavities or other oral healthcare issues. Other dental conditions diet can affect include:

  • Gum disease (gingivitis)
  • Susceptibility to infection
  • Periodontal disease

These common dental problems can be prevented or reduced drastically when you employ a healthy diet with minimal sugar. The types of sugar, how and when you consume them, and how much sugar you consume, all can have a direct effect on your dental health. Also, eating a lot of acidic foods can eat away at the enamel of your teeth, so the dentist may suggest reducing those foods as well.

When choosing snacks, keep these tips in mind for good dental health. Eat a well-balanced meal that includes, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, low-fat & fat-free dairy foods, along with lean sources of protein. Limit the number of snacks you consume, and choose foods that increase the production of saliva, to help clean the teeth and lessen the effects of acid.
