One of the most common requests we hear when it comes to improving the appearance of our patient’s smiles is teeth whitening. You can also read about many ways people are trying to accomplish this using homemade remedies. But are they effective? Let’s take a look!
#1 You hear about using lemons or apple cider vinegar (or even pineapples containing digestive enzymes). And while fruit is good for your body, these fruits can actually damage your teeth. The acids in citrus fruit and vinegar can actually erode your tooth enamel which protects you against tooth sensitivity and decay.
#2 Have you read about using a baking soda/hydrogen peroxide paste or activated charcoal to scrub your teeth into whiteness? The American Dental Association has stated that there’s just no evidence that either charcoal dental products are either safe or effective for teeth. And if you continuously scrub your enamel with abrasives like baking soda, your softer dentin layer will begin to be noticeable, which is yellower in color.
#3 Oil pulling is likely another natural method you’ve heard or read about, along with turmeric powder for whiter teeth. But neither have been scientifically proven to whiten teeth.
The best way to keep your teeth healthy looking is to brush and floss every day and seeing your dentist for cleanings. You can also try scientifically tested products, such as tooth whitening toothpaste or whitening strips with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, which means it’s both safe and effective.
