Radiograph: Another name for an x-ray range of other dentists in the same area with the same training.
Relative Value schedule (R.V.S): Procedures are given a point value determined by the degree of difficulty. Each procedure is also given a dollar amount. The dollar amount is multiplied by the point value to determine what the insurance company will pay.
Resin bonded bridge: An acid-etched, thin metal-reinforced bridge requiring only slight or no reduction of the anchor teeth. Also called a Maryland bridge.
Resin Filling: See Composite filling.
Restorative: Procedures performed to restore the missing part of the teeth. Some insurance companies only consider the fillings to be restorative; others consider the fillings, crowns, bridges and dentures to be restorative.
Retainer: A gadget that the orthodontist gives you to wear after the orthodontist removes your braces. The retainer attaches to your upper teeth and holds them in the correct position. You wear the retainer at night to make sure that none of your teeth move while your jaw hardens and your teeth get strongly attached to you jaw.
Retrognathic: An underdeveloped or receded appearing lower jaw.
Retrognathism: The state of being retrognathic.
Retruded: A term used when your front teeth are slated lingually (i.e. toward the back of your mouth).
Ridge Augmentation: A surgical buildup of missing bone and tissue. Usually done to make a denture fit better.
Root: The part of your tooth in your gums.
Root Canal: A procedure where damage or diseased nerve and blood vessels of a tooth are removed from the tooth and replaced with a filling material.
Root Canal Therapy (R.C.T.): The nerve of the tooth is removed from the canal inside the root and replaced with a filling material.
Root Planing: Deep cleaning of the teeth to remove calculus below the gum line. This is not a prophylaxis. This is a periodontal procedure and is usually performed one quadrant at a time. Procedure code 4341.
Rotation: a movement in which the tooth turned along the long axis of the tooth.
Rubber Dam: A thin piece of rubber that can be applied to the teeth to control moisture during treatment.
