Fluoride Varnishes-What's Old is New Again!

Fluoride varnishes have been around for many years, but were seldom used since the advent of  in-office applications of one minute fluoride gels and foams.  After numerous studies and re-formulations, we are offering fluoride varnishes as an option for fluoride treatments.  The varnishes allow for longer exposure time on the enamel and root; increasing the uptake of fluoride.  The varnish is painted on the tooth and any exposed root surfaces and hardens as a tooth-colored  coating and will be removed when the patient brushes later that day.  (Usually 4-6 hours after application.)  The varnish allows you to eat and drink  immediately after if you like, rather than the 30 minutes we ask you to wait with the tray application.  Many patients have noticed an almost instant decrease in sensitivity also.  Just one more way to protect the investment you've made in your mouth!
